About the Competitive Program

  • The competitive program is an overall dedication to the art of performing dance - it is about pushing the limits to be the best dancer you can be! 

  • Dancers are motivated & trained to reach their full potential through intense technical training & conditioning, choreography, personal attention, and performance opportunities. 

  • Dancers in the competitive program gain self esteem, confidence, technique, coordination, musicality, creativity & discipline as well as learn responsibility and time management skills, and experience what it means to be in a team.

  • Classes are taught in a positive, enthusiastic, and supportive environment by our award winning & professionally accredited instructors

  • Dancers will be placed in a level that is best suited to their abilities & goals

  • We currently offer competitive classes in Acro, Ballet, Hip Hop, Jazz, Lyrical, Musical Theatre, Pointe, and Tap in various levels

  • Class levels are Mini (ages 5-8), Junior (ages 9-11), Intermediate (ages 12-14), Senior (ages 15+)

  • Current IVDA Comp. Dancers are required to attend the Summer Dance Intensive.

Competitive Prerequisites

  • In addition to their competitive classes, all competitive dancers in any discipline except Hip Hop & Tap are required to register & attend:
    • 2 ballet class a week:
      • Students in Graded ballet classes (Pre-Primary, Primary & Grades 1 to 5) take 2 ballet classes per week in their grade
      • Students in Vocational ballet classes (Grades 6 to 8, Inter Foundation, Intermediate & Advanced 1 to 2) take 1 ballet class in their level & a ballet technique class
          • NOTE: Students in Vocational Solo Seal classes take at least 3 ballet classes a week in addition to their weekly private Solo Seal training.

    All comp. students are also required to register & attend technique classes for their level that supplement their competitive classes, as follows:

    • The Jazz Technique class for all competitive Acro, Jazz, Lyrical, Musical Theatre students

    • The Tap Technique class for all competitive Tap students

    • The Acro Technique class for all competitive Acro students

  • Competitive students are encouraged to register & attend any other technique class that is offered above that which is required

Competitions

  • Our competitive team will compete in 4-6 competitions per season.

  • Competitions are held locally and possibly out-of-town.

  • Our competitive team may have the opportunity to compete at the National level based on eligibility from Regional competitions.

  • Our competitive may have opportunities to perform for other various events, such as benefits, showcases, etc., based on team availability.

Workshops/Conventions:

 

  • We highly recommend that our competitive dancers participate in at least 1 workshop/convention per dance season. 
  • Attending workshops/conventions is a great way to learn from some of the hottest choreographers in the industry, learn new dance techniques & styles, improve your skills, meet new people, and have fun!
  • If you are interested in registering for a workshop/convention, please speak with the Studio Director.  Spaces fill up quickly at workshops/conventions so register ASAP.

Dress Code

Costume Fees

  • Competitive costumes are either designed by IVDA & custom-made, ordered through costume catalogues, or purchased at regular shopping stores.

  • Costume prices will vary based on age, level, and/or custom-made versus catalogued. 

  • Every effort will be made to keep costume prices reasonable.

  • A costume deposit is required for each class the student is registered for:

    • $100.00 deposit per costume

    • Deposits are required in October

    • Costume deposits are non-refundable after December as costumes have been ordered

  • Costume balances are due in February

Competitive Meeting

  • There will be a mandatory competitive meeting in mid-September/mid-October.  The meeting date will be confirmed in September.

  • We will discuss the inner workings of competition, competitive dates & locations, and accommodations

  • Any concerns/conflicts regarding competition should be addressed at this meeting. 

  • Be sure to bring the students school schedule (class trips, exams, etc.), other commitments schedules (confirmations, etc.), etc. to this meeting

  • A competition info package will be distributed at this meeting

Competitive Showcase

  • Every competitive routine will perform at the competitive showcase.

  • Attendance of the competitive showcase is mandatory to participate in the competitive program.

  • The showcase prepares our dancers for competition by giving them the opportunity to perform their routines on stage in front of a live audience.

  • The showcase will be video taped so that the students and instructors can perfect their routines before competition begins.

Picture Day Info

  • Each competitive routine will have their picture professionally taken in full costume, hair & make-up.

Dress Rehearsal

  • Every competitive routine will rehearse is in full costume & make-up.
  • Attendance of the dress rehearsal is mandatory to participate in the year-end recital.

Recital

  • Every competitive routine will perform at our annual year-end recital.
